5 Tips for a Smooth Hari Raya Balik Kampung Trip

Driving home this Raya? Here’s a quick guide to making the trip as hassle-free and enjoyable as possible!

1. Plan Your Journey

This should be number one on your list! Plan your trips according to the updated highway travel time advisory (TTA). It is typically available on the respective official highway websites (here’s last year’s Raya travel advisory from PLUS). Give yourself sufficient travel time to include fuel, toll top-ups, prayer and rest stops. This way, you won’t have to rush or speed to get to your destination.

Bonus Tip:  Save the phone numbers of your insurance toll service as well as highway helplines for emergency assistance.

2. Service Your Car

Schedule a service three to five days before your trip if one is due soon. On the day of your trip, make sure to check tire pressure, water or coolant, engine and transmission oil as well as battery water (if you are not using a non-maintenance battery).

Bonus Tip: Air conditioner servicing can be helpful to reduce fuel costs!

3. Install GPS Software

Even if you ‘know the way’, it’s a good idea to have a backup plan just in case you make a wrong turn. You don’t have to spend on expensive GPS devices; just download free apps like Waze or HERE WeGo to navigate your journey.

Bonus Tip: When using your smartphone as a GPS device; bring a travel charger or power bank to ensure your phone’s call and data plan is sufficient to stay connected in case of emergencies.

4. Pack Light Snacks

For very long journeys (e.g. five hours or more), be sure to stock up on travel treats. If possible, avoid packing foods that are high in salt as this would require more frequent bathroom breaks. Ideal, inexpensive snacks that can last a four to five-hour journey include homemade sandwiches, crackers, carrot sticks, grapes and apple slices. Pack in resealable bags or a cooler box to maintain freshness.

5. Enjoy The Ride

Your trip back home doesn’t have to be stressful! Road trips can be an exciting journey in itself as you take in the scenery of lush mountains and greenery. If you are travelling with family and friends, use the stretch to reconnect and spend quality time!

If you need a little extra cash this Raya, apply online for a personal loan at affordable rates!
